Importing a car into Uganda requires adherence to specific regulations. Vehicles older than 15 years are prohibited from importation to align with the country's environmental policies. Vehicles imported into Uganda are subject to various taxes, including import duty, VAT, withholding tax, and an environmental levy.

Regulations, Taxes, and Rules for Importing Cars into Uganda

Uganda imposes an import duty of 25% on the Customs Value (CIF), a Value Added Tax (VAT) of 18%, a withholding tax of 6%, and an environmental levy, which ranges from 20% to 50% of the car's value depending on the age of the vehicle. Cars older than 8 years attract a higher environmental levy. Additionally, imported cars must undergo a roadworthiness inspection by the Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) before they are allowed entry into the country.

Required Documents

The required documents for importing a car into Uganda include the original Bill of Lading, Commercial Invoice, Certificate of Title, and a Pre-Export Verification of Conformity (PVoC) certificate from the Uganda National Bureau of Standards. Other necessary documents include an import permit, proof of ownership, and proof of insurance.

Uganda's car market primarily consists of used vehicles imported from Japan, the UK, and the UAE. Popular car brands include Toyota, Nissan, and Subaru due to their reliability, availability of spare parts, and fuel efficiency.
